Nobody likes to think about it. But if we must, we prefer our poverty at a distance. Yet given that a whopping 30% of Las Crucens live in poverty, odds are that poverty is much closer than you think. Poverty is not just morally wrong. It is a legislative malpractice.
As many of you know, like the 30% of New Mexican children living in poverty, I also grew up in poverty. The difference between them and I is that I had a lot of luck along the way.
